Analysis and Application Paper Instructions

To successfully complete this assignment, you will:

·       Analyze 3 scenarios (based on actual events) and identify developmental characteristics of a child aged 2–6 that are evident in the behavior of the children described.

·       Apply knowledge from the field of developmental psychology to provide a basis for the legal system’s determination that children should not be held responsible for crimes committed.

·       Present this information in a professional manner, implementing current APA guidelines for style and formatting.

Scenario One:

One day at school in a small town in Michigan, two children had a disagreement on the playground. This was not an unusual occurrence as anyone who has spent time with six-year olds can attest. However, the next day a terrible tragedy resulted. While the teacher led the class through the hall to the computer lab, one of the children pulled a loaded pistol from his backpack, pointed it at his classmate shouting, “I don’t like you,” and then shot her. She died soon after at the hospital.

Scenario Two:

Six-year-old Michael and Bill* lived in the hills of Kentucky. One day, Michael found some scrap metal that he hoped to sell for a few cents. When Bill (who was older) slapped Michael and took the metal for himself, Michael ran home, took his father’s shotgun down from the wall, then went outside and shot his playmate dead. *Not their real names.

Scenario Three:

In a hot, overcrowded apartment in Kansas City, a sixteen-year old girl fell asleep while baby-sitting several young children. She did not awaken when an 18-month old boy in her charge began to cry. When a six-year old girl grew tired of listening to him, she took the younger child to the bathtub, and held him under water until he died.

Each of these stories represents a tragic and senseless loss of life. While an adult in any of these circumstances would certainly have been charged with first-degree murder, none of the children described were punished because standards within our legal system indicate that young children cannot be held responsible for crimes such as these.

For this assignment, imagine that you are a developmental psychologist asked to defend this policy. Your arguments must describe developmental characteristics found in children at this age. You will apply concepts and theories used in developmental psychology to explain why our legal system is justified in ruling that young children are not responsible for criminal actions. Use only information provided in this document and in our textbook. Do not make assumptions about home life, parenting, environment, etc.

Content Requirements:

Your paper must include 3 main sections (in addition to your introduction and conclusion):

·       First, describe a biological argument for this policy. What physical or biological characteristics do we find in a child under six years of age that would excuse them from responsibility for their actions? (Focus on development within the brain, not myelination or motor skills).

·       Second, describe a cognitive argument for this policy. What is it about the way a child processes information during this stage of life that would lead us to believe that they are not capable of understanding the consequences of their actions (focus on the work of Piaget).

·       Third, provide an argument for this policy based on the child’semotional and/or social development. What characteristics do we find in a child of this age in terms of emotional and moral development?

·       In your conclusion identify which of the 3 factors provides the most compelling argument for this legal standard.

Research and Formatting Requirements:

·       Proper APA formatting is required for this assignment. Current APA resources have been made available for you and can be found in the Addition Information folder.

·       Using only your textbook as a resource, include concepts to support your arguments. Identify any information used with in-text citations.

·       Your paper must include 900–1,200 words.

·       You are a professional in training. Remember to check spelling, punctuation, and grammar before submitting your paper. Click here for tips on writing at the college level.

DO NOT include the following in your paper:

·       Legal definitions of criminal intent or culpability.

·       Environmental factors related to parenting, neglect, socio-economic status, or role-models.

·       Spiritual interventions that might have prevented these tragedies.

A Word about Plagiarism:

Plagiarism is serious academic offense with serious consequences. Listed below are some common errors that could lead to problems with plagiarism:

1.     Copying words or phrases and using them in your paper without identifying the source. Note that if you choose to include copied words or phrases, points will be deducted as direct quotes are not allowed in this paper. However, if you choose to include copied text (a direct quote) you must include these 3 things: 1) quotation marks, 2) in-text citation, and 3) a corresponding reference.

2.     Improper paraphrasing. Sometimes, students mistakenly believe that by copying text and then substituting words or changing the order of words is the proper way to paraphrase. This is not correct. To paraphrase, you must rewrite the text entirely in your own words.

3.     “Recycling” a paper. Obviously, you are not allowed to use another person’s paper to write your own. Even if you use it as a guide but modify the text, it is still cheating. In addition, you may not re-submit work which retains essential elements of an assignment used for another course. Your work must be 100% original in this term.

View the attatched clinical scenario and write a 2-3 page summary of your assessment,

View the attatched clinical scenario and write a 2-3 page summary of your assessment, diagnosis and treatment recommendation. This needs to include the following:

a. The methods and strategies you would use in order to perform the initial assessment.

b. Which diagnoses would you consider?

c. What is your case formulation? That is more comprehensive than just the diagnosis. For example let’s say you are considering ‘Major Depression” as a Diagnosis. Your case formulation may be something like this: “this patient has suffered significant recent loses in his life, and in the context of possible biological vulnerabilities (ie; history of maternal depression) and limited psychological resources he has developed a depressive condition”.

d. What is your treatment plan?

e. What else would you have liked to know about this patient, which was not given to you in the case scenario, and you think it may have been very useful in order to reach a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan?

Please DO NOT write more than 3 pages (about 1000-1200 words). APA formatting. Times New Roman. Double Spaced. 1 inch margins all around. Thank you.

Older adults are also a group that tends to be largely overlooked. Let’s work to understand needs in this group better and to challenge one another to increase in sensitivity to these particular needs.

In addition, this week we will take a closer look at Issues in Theory and Practice                  Ethical practice requires a solid theoretical framework. Counselor’s theoretical positions and conceptual views influence how they practice. Ideally, theory helps practitioners make sense of what they hear in counseling sessions.

Issues in Theory and Practice: From an ethical perspective, counselors need to anchor their practices to theory. Without a theoretical foundation, counselors are left with little rationale to formulate therapeutic goal and develop techniques to accomplish these goals. Theories of counseling are based on worldviews, each with its own values, biases, and assumptions of how best to bring about change in the therapeutic process.

In this assignment, begin by taking a retrospective look at your life history

Assignment 1: Retrospective Analysis of Persons

In this assignment, begin by taking a retrospective look at your life history, to discuss which aspects of your personality have remained consistent and which aspects of your personality have changed over time. Then, analyze the roles of nature and nurture in shaping your personality. Subsequently, discuss possible sources of inaccuracy and bias in any retrospective analysis. Finally, discuss the reasons why systematic scientific studies are considered more valuable than individual accounts.

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

Reflect on your life history and discuss which aspects of your personality have changed over time and which aspects have stayed consistent.

Based on your retrospective analysis, describe the roles of nature and nurture in shaping your personality. Reflect on your justification for distinguishing between nature and nurture.

Discuss the possible sources of bias and inaccuracy whenever a person looks back on their past history. Be sure to discuss factors related to memory and factors related to cognition.

Describe why the science of psychology places more emphasis on results based on scientific studies than it does on personal experience and anecdotes.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format.  Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

Social justice has been defined in different ways, but the definitions usually include similar ideologies

Social justice has been defined in different ways, but the definitions usually include similar ideologies. As you study the concept of social justice, you will come across some of the following ideas:

  • Historical inequities that affect current injustices should be corrected until the actual inequities no longer exist or have been perceptively “negated.”
  • Wealth, power, and status should be redistributed for the good of the individual, the community, and the society.
  • It is the responsibility of the government (or those who hold significant power) to ensure a basic quality of life for all its citizens.

From country to country social justice is defined in different ways, and the definitions usually include ideologies as well as differences. Research the definition of social justice in the United States using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Select another country to examine its definition of social justice in order to analyze the ideologies and similarities using the following steps:

  1. Analyze the ideologies.
  2. Identify the similarities.
  3. Using your reasoning skills, give supporting statements or arguments that support your position(s) about the social justice.

Your comparing and contrasting must consider the following:

  • Historical values and ideologies of the country
  • Economic structure of the country
  • Discrimination issues, if any exist

Develop a 2–3-page analysis of the definitions of social justice in the U.S. and a country of your choice. Analyze the ideologies, identify their similarities, and explain how these factors support your statements or arguments about the social justice you’ve selected. Support your explanations with a minimum of two scholarly sources in addition to the course text and apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Effective parent-school relationships begin with classroom teacher and individual parents

Exploring the Role of Parents

Effective parent-school relationships begin with classroom teacher and individual parents. While parents clearly know their children best, as education professionals, classroom teachers need to take the lead in establishing and maintaining these relationships. Moreover, the most effective relationships take the form of a partnership between parent and teacher/school. This partnership arrangement is of the most benefit to the student.

In a two- to five-page paper (not including the title page and reference page), describe the steps necessary to establish and maintain an effective parent-teacher relationship through addressing the following:

  • Describe the role of parents and teachers in developing and utilizing an effective parent/teacher relationship.
  • Explain how each party knows whether or not the relationship is effective, including criteria used to determine this.
  • Describe how students benefit from this relationship.

Mark Davis has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Your State v. Mark

Mark Davis has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) for reckless driving, speeding, four counts of felony assault, and one count of involuntary manslaughter as the result of a crash that occurred on a night out with his friends. Mark has been out on bail and pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned. The Judge set a date for Mark’s trial and his defense team has been working to collect information about the technology used by the Highway Patrol to reconstruct the crash.

District Attorney O’Malley offered Mark a plea bargain, but Mark chose to take his chances at trial. Mark’s attorney, Mr. Chen Long, advised Mark that accepting the plea offer was completely up to Mark, although Mr. Long advised against accepting it because the defense planned to highlight mistakes made by law enforcement during the investigation that could create reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors.

The trial begins and during the voir dire of potential jurors, several individuals are excused because they have previous knowledge of Mark’s case from the media. Two individuals stated that they could not be impartial because they had loved ones killed in alcohol related crashes as well. Eventually, two men and ten women were seated in Mark’s trial.

District Attorney O’Malley presented the State’s case clearly and concisely depicting a night on the town full of heavy drinking, which ultimately resulted in Mark’s actions causing the death of one individual and injuring four others. Highway Patrolman Green explained to the jury that he immediately suspected alcohol when he arrived on scene because Mark appeared to be intoxicated when they spoke. Following the Judge ruling that it was admissible and not prejudicial, Sergeant Rodney Monroe, from the Highway Patrol Reconstruction Team presented their reconstruction complete with a high-tech computer animated reenactment of the crash. During the cross examination, Defense Attorney Long challenged the reconstruction because the Defense Crash Reconstruction Expert had discovered errors in the mathematical calculations for vehicle speed. The jury appeared to have liked the reconstruction very much regardless of the errors highlighted by the defense.

Mark was convicted of DWI, four counts of felony assault, and one count of involuntary manslaughter; however, he was acquitted of reckless driving and speeding. The Jury said they could not convict Mark of those offenses because of the mistakes made by law enforcement officers during the investigation.

Because Mark pleads not guilty, but was convicted during trial and had two prior DWI offenses, he was sentenced to ten years in the State Prison. Defense Attorney Long immediately notified the court of an impending appeal that would be filed by the defendant. In a report, using external sources to support your claims, answer the following:

  1. Compare and contrast the roles of the Judge, Jury, District Attorney (Prosecutor), and Defense Attorney. What are their primary functions and purposes in the courtroom Workgroup?
  2. Discuss the rights of the defendant in your state during the trial phase of the criminal justice process.
  3. Discuss the rights of the victims and/or their families in your state during the pre-trial and trial phase of the criminal justice process. Would it be unusual for the family of a deceased victim to become angered by a slow criminal justice process or one where they are not permitted by law to be given information about the facts or evidence in the case by the District Attorney’s Office before the trial?
  4. Compare and contrast plea-bargaining versus going to trial. Historically, opponents to plea bargains have claimed that they are used to alleviate heavy workloads of prosecutors (district attorneys). Prosecutors argue that plea-bargaining is a necessary part of the criminal justice process for several reasons. Where is the future of the criminal justice process headed in this regard?
  5. Analyze how the Highway Patrol’s computer animated reenactment might have related to the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) effect in the courtroom.

Society’s response to crime has changed over the past century

Society’s response to crime has changed over the past century. The approach of rehabilitation in the 1960s has gradually been replaced with a “get tough on crime” approach, bringing in mandatory sentencing laws and long prison sentences. Regardless of the approach, crime continues to be a problem, and recidivism for some crimes and some offenders remains high. In this assignment, you will explore society’s response to crime and different concepts of justice.

Read the following article from the Argosy University online library:

Research the ideas of justice using the textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet.

Based on your research and the discussions so far, analyze the usefulness of the ideas of justice in lowering recidivism. Address the following:

  • Is restorative justice useful in lowering the rate of recidivism? For which types of crimes and offenders is it most useful? Make sure to include any demographic information that may be useful in defending this type of “justice.”
  • Is procedural or moral justice more applicable for this aim? For which types of crimes and offenders is it most useful? Make sure to include any demographic information that may defend one or the other.
  • Which type of justice is most useful based on the psychological theories of crime? For which types of crimes and offenders is it most useful?

Make sure your essay includes the following:

  • A title page with a running head
  • Headings
  • A reference page
